What are RUMs? What are SpecOps? What does FIC mean?

RUM stands for "Reenacted U-Boot Mission". The term "SpecOp" stands for "Special Operation" and means 99% the same. SpecOps were used by us in our predecessor-flotilla, the "17. Unterseebootflotille Nordfront", to indicate that specific tasks had to be executed as part of our numerous campaigns. In the following we use the term RUM.

An RUM is a mission that reenacts/portrays a real historical event that took place during WWII. Playing such RUM does not necessarily mean that events will unfold as they actually occurred. It is up to the player to determine what courses of action to take during the mission.

An RUM may be easy or complex, short or long, fun or even sometimes boring, depending on the historical scenario being reenacted  and on the mission maker's creative skills. One thing a RUM should always be, however, is informative.

And if a mission is neither a RUM, nor a SpecOp, it is entirely fictional. Be surprised what the mission-writers have come up with and join us!

The Avon Lady initiated the RUM concept. She was reading up on incidents of ships sunk and lives lost to U-Boote in Allied convoys and thought it relevant that SH3 players get a  perspective on how a game like SH3 can reflect historical events and the people that were involved. Later Dowly and CCIP joined. And yet later the 3rd and 34th flotilla added their concept of "Special Operations", mostly handcrafted missions with very often a true historical background.

After the self-destructive and unfortunate closure of XVII this idea had been burried under the rubble of senseless SuSi-welcome-messages - and it was not until 20150610 that this almost forgotten idea was revived. Since 20160729 then these mission were no longer collected in threads, but instead well foreseeingly on the OPERATION SPINNENNETZ and also in the S3MA.

How do you install and play one of these missions?

Go into the folder of your installation of SH3 where you want to install this to. That might look like "D:\SilentHunterIII\"
If you do not know the path then take S3F - it will show you!
Next, go into the sub-folder "data\".

READ: Is it an SP or an MP mission?

Then go into either into sub-folder:
a) SingleMissions, e.g. "D:\SilentHunterIII\data\SingleMissions\"
or respectively
b) MultiMissions, e.g. "D:\SilentHunterIII\data\MultiMissions\"

Think: What is your selected language in the game?

a) Is it English? Then go into sub-directory "English".
b) Is it German? Then go into sub-directory "German".

READ: What is the EXACT filename of the mission?

IF there is NO folder with that name already included create a sub-folder of the EXACT SAME NAME: Example#1:
You run the game in English and the SP-mission file-name is "testmission.mis"
The folder-name MUST be "...\SilentHunterIII\data\SingleMissions\English\testmission"

Example#2:
You run game in German and the MP-mission file-name is "Schleichfahrt.mis"
The folder-name MUST be "...\SilentHunterIII\data\MultiMissions\German\Schleichfahrt"
ELSE: Copy that folder (which itself includes the .mis file) into that location that you have just dived into.

Next, start your SH3-installation (the one you have installed this into).

IF it is an MP-mission Make sure you have a network-connection running.
Otherwise you can only play that MP-mission alone.
Start the SH3 option for Multiplayer on LAN: Multiplayer, Wolfpack (whatever it is called in your setup).
(This option is for instance called "RUDELANGRIFF" in the GWM-Mod).
ELSE Click on SINGLE MISSION

Select the mission. A mission with that name should show up in that list.
Make further settings to your liking.  Go ahead to run that mission.

Start it and enjoy - either alone or together with your wolfpack-friends!

NOTE: Instead of creating a new file in the data/MultiMissions folder, if needed, you can rename the original '.mis' filename to something shorter, like, 'today.mis' instead of a lengthy filename. Just make sure the FOLDER matches the name of the file (FOLDER 'today' for mission-file 'today.mis').

REV_BL!TZKR!EG:
I would like to try and write a mission myself, where can I start with?
SH3 mission editing knowledge is all scattered on SuSi, since the administration there never cared about order and overview
other than harassing members that have a different opinion. But here are some: If you are not familiar with SH3's mission editor,
see SH3MissionEditorDocumentation - also Red Devil has an excellent Mission Creation Basics tutorial to get you started.

I would like to see my mission hosted on your map, how do I do that?
If you have missions to share with all the SH3-fans and want to have them listed here,
you MUST use [S3MT] - The Silent Hunter III-Mission Toolkit
and adhere to the format described in THE SILENT HUNTER III - MISSION ARCHIVE - NEW REPORTING PROCEDURES!
