First of all,

let's all stay calm and not start a holy war about this. In this approach I would like to make some things clear:
  • No matter on which machine we run our tests:
    • at least 8GB RAM on a 64bit Windows
    • 4GB-Tuning active (easiest way: [S3F] - The Silent Hunter III-Front-End)
    • Write down what GFX-card you have (own memory or shared?)
    • Write down what anti-aliasing you use
    • Make sure you use your BEST GFX-card (I for instance can select one of my two (!) GFX-cards, by choosing the GPU)
  • We need comparable results, the taskmanager is therefore not the best choice
AND SCREENSHOTS PLEASE - or it did not happen or you are lazy or gay!

Ways to reduce memory waste are to...
- optimize textures
- remove all the skins of other boats besides that ONE that you play
- remove all the interiors other boats besides that ONE that you play
- remove unused units

Open questions:
Some mods increase the "ingame-environment" from 8km to up to 20km.
Does the engine consume more memory then?

FSAutoStart allows the user the ability to automatically shutdown services and programs to provide as much resources to running Flight Simulator as possible. It also provides the ability to launch selected programs before Flight Simulator is launched. Lastly it can automatically restart those programs and services previously shut down, thus bringing the computer back to it's original state. It also adds some performance enhancing options like Defragment Memory.

FSAutoStart is a tiny tool that provides a simple means of automatically shutting down various services and programs that take up a lot of CPU and system memory.
This utility is ideal for the users who usually need to go that extra mile to be able to run a program which requires a high amount of resources.
The user interface is rather plain and simple, easy to navigate through and both less experienced users and power users can benefit from FSAutoStart. The GUI hosts three modules, each with its corresponding sub-features.
In the Services section you can view a list of all the applications installed on your computer, along with a description, status, startup type, and logging information. Each one can be started, stopped, resumed, paused or restarted. Additionally, there's an option to cleanup disks and also, to customize the view.
The Programs section grants access to the applications that are currently running on the system. Each of them can be completely halted, stopped and restarted, or removed from the list. Saving the program settings is also possible.
In the Configuration module, you can set a path to an application, command line, process priority, delay before auto starting other programs, but there are other options too, such as setting the number of seconds to wait before killing a non-responsive program, memory defragmentation, log control output, and others.
Evidently, the program uses a tiny portion of CPU and system memory. Our tests ran great, and FSAutoStart managed to free up some of the resources.
The fact of the matter is that FSAutoStart is a great tweaking tool that offers you additional access to your installed applications in order to maximize the performance of the computer.

NOTE! The programmer has updated AND RENAMED that tool: AlacrityPC download | SourceForge.net

SH3 was developed for and intended to run on systems with single-core processors. These are some recommendations I collected:

-unknown-
For 64-bit systems, set SH3.exe to run with affinity on Core 0, especially if you're using quad-core or better.
This forces SH3 to "think" it is running on a single-core system and properly use threading.
This can help prevent many crashes and CTDs for SH3.

-desertstriker(he/she/it/homo/trans)-
V sync. synchronizes the max FPS with your monitor Hz.  So if you have 60 Hz monitor your FPS will be maxed at 60.
In a more technical phrasing, the V sync will prevent anything else from rendering till the screen refresh happens.
Usually, this setting is only enabled if the player is having a graphics glitch called screen tearing. So leave that off.

If you want to see FPS ingame, you can get that info by using CTRL-F8.
