18 September

14:40       After further fruitless hydrophone check, set course towards south, to bear away from aircraft bases.

All tubes loaded and internal reload space available, but will not bring in external reloads until further away from aircraft threat.

17:01       Alarm! In ET66, crash dive to avoid aircraft astern, passing by to starboard.

17:05        Aircraft is large twin-engine land-plane which does not appear to have spotted us and does not attack.

17:30        After further hydrophone sweeps, surfaced the boat...

                ...and continued to southwards.

UNDERSTOOD. POSITION PLOTTED. EXTEND YOUR PATROL TO THE GREATER GRID AREA AS PREVIOUSLY ORDERED.
AT THE SAME TIME TRY TO CONSERVE FUEL BY AVOIDING HIGH SPEEDS AND STAYING SUBMERGED IN 24H SHIFTS.

GUTE JAGD!

KTB U-105

19 September

06:40       In ET68 proceeding SSE surfaced at economical speed.

06:45       To 25 meters for a submerged run while conducting hydrophone sweeps.

09:30      While back on surface to maintain battery charge, forced to dive by approaching aircraft.

Enemy is small twin-engine landplane, Lockheed type...

...who dives to attack just as we are leaving the surface.

09:30      Boat was rocked violently by explosion of bombs or low-set depth charges.

              Incredibly, we seem undamaged.

09:35     Levelled boat at 60 metres and reduced revolutions for extended cruise submerged.

These damned aircraft are everywhere. A real flying circus of different types, but they are not clowning around!

19th September

11:26       While proceeding submerged to east in ET93, hydrophones detect warship off starboard bow, closing fast.

11:28      Ordered dive to 80 meters and silent running. Picked up merchantman on same bearing as warship.

11:34     Altered course towards sound contacts. Intention - identify contacts visually then shadow freighter, attacking when sea state settles sufficiently.

11:45    All sound contact lost. To periscope depth.

11:48    Horizons clear, although visibility is very poor.

11:50    Surface the boat.

Proceeding towards last sound contact at high speed in an effort to pick it up again after submerging. Visibility effectively nil.

UNFORTUNATELY U-105 HAS NEVER RESPONDED AGAIN. EVENTUALLY IT WAS DECLARED LOST AT SEA.
