Incident Report: 12 Sep 1939, 11:50
We were actively engaging a Polish large cargo ship with the deck gun. We had successfully hit the ship with 1 Eto and were now finishing it off. Two Luftwaffe aircraft set up an attack run directly over our U-boot and dropped their ordinance at danger close to our position, sinking the ship with one hit. We took no damage. As the aircraft were performing their attack run the AA gunner, Bootsmann Henning Richter, opened fire on the approaching aircraft. I recognized the aircraft immediately and ordered him to stop. He ceased fire and, to my knowledge, the aircraft were not damaged.
Recommend the following:
Court martial for Bootsmann Henning Richter with suggested punishments:
- Retraining on aircraft identification
- Retraining on engagement procedures for AA guns
- Minimal punishment along the lines of extra duty and/or restriction to barracks
- Reassignment of Henning Richter to another U-boot and/or Flotilla
Also recommend filing complaint with Luftwaffe for the incident and emphasize need for pilot training.
Note/OOC: Wrong rank has been fixed as discussed. Continue :)
