GIBRALTAR CROSSING
After a brief at-sea trial, U-133 departed Lorient on 07-NOV-41 for Mittelmeer. The Allantik transit was uneventful until we reached CG8597, where we sighted a north-bound convoy. We engaged in the afternoon in moderate seas and sank a British Ore Carrier, Large Merchent and Liberty Cargo ship.
We then proceeded to our entry point, 300 KM west of Gibraltar in CG9779 and began our ingress the morning of 14-NOV-41. We timed our approach to be approximately 60 KM from Gibraltar at sundown. During the ingress, we had to dive several time upon sighting enemy aircraft, some of which dropped wasserbombs, but we sustained no damage. By sundown, the fly-overs ceased and we proceeded inbound decks awash until sighting our first warship and proceeded to periscope depth. The night was fairly clear with a light fog. We hugged the Moroccan coast at periscope depth and sighted or heard at least a dozen warships inbound to Gibraltar, including several patrol craft patrolling the southern Moroccan coast. We also sighted several destroyers patrolling to the east of Gibraltar.
We finally surfaced and by the morning of 16-NOV-41, we were 300 KM east of Gibraltar. Six hours later, we engaged and sank our first enemy merchant in Mittelmeer. On 19,20-NOV-41, we sank three more enemy merchants. We then proceeded south between Afrika and Sicily and observed several small enemy convoy attacks by Italian bombers. In these attacks, almost all the merchants were sunk, but the Italians did lose some aircraft and we spent a day rescuing downed Italian aircrewmen.
We then proceeded east-southeast along the Sicilian coast and turned southeast toward CO45. En route, we sank one more merchant and its escort. We then headed for Salamis. On 30-NOV-41, in heavy rain, fog and moderate seas, we were suddenly surprised by a destroyer coming out of the fog at 16 knots. We were particially submerged when we realized we had run into an Italian task force of six destroyers, a Litterio class Battleship and a Duga degli Abruzzi class Light Cruiser steaming on a heading of 155. We immediately surfaced and showed our colors to the task force.
The remaining journey to Salamis was uneventful.

MITTELMEER PATROL 1
On 28-DEZ-41, U-133 entered Gruppe C at CO5311 and made our way east toward CO65 and CO68. Almost immediately, we were harassed on a daily basis by enemy aircraft. On 31-DEZ-41, we came across and sank an escorted British Empire Freighter. We had to expend 3 torpedoes as one ran deep directly under the target. The escort attacked with wasserbombs, but lost track of us passing 80 meters and we sustained no damage.
We sailed toward Alexandria and on 03-JAN-42 we were attacked by a British Hudson bomber in CP4761, whose wasserbombs caused minor hull damage. At this point, the airborne threat was becoming so prevalent, we decided to head back to the choke point between Tobruk to the south and Crete to the north.
On 09-JAN-42, we made contact with a merchant heading west in CO56. We chased down an Australian Liberty Cargo in the eastern portion of Gruppe B {CO55} and sank her expending 4 torpedoes, one of which again ran deep under the target and one which struck her broadside but did not detonate.
We continued to patrol this area and on 10-JAN-42 made contact with a heavily escorted British Large Merchant in CO5598 heading east. U-133 slipped inside the escort screen and sank the merchant with two torpedoes. Knowing the escorts would be on us quickly, we dove stern first to mask our cavitations. By the time the first escort was above us, we were passing 80 meters slow and silent. We continued our decent to 125 meters and could hear 3 escorts above us. They circled for 45 minutes, but did not detect us nor drop any wasserbombs.
On 11-JAN-42, we sank a Australian Small Freighter heading east in CO5563 with one torpedo and easily evaded the accompanying escort. We then proceeded north to the southwest tip of Crete to load our two external torpedoes before heading south again.
On 12-JAN-42, U-133 sank an Australian Small Freighter and a British Large Merchant in two separate engagements in CO5536 and CO5289 respectively. In the second engagement, we had to let an accompanying armed Coastal Freighter go because we were out of torpedoes.
We were headed back to Salamis when on 13-JAN-42 we encountered an enemy Task Force of 3 Fiji Cruisers and 3 Destroyer escorts in CO5621 heading 120 at 14-15 knots. We surfaced just long enough to send off a contact signal and then did a crash dive to 145 meters to evade two escorts, which quickly converged on our location. The escorts did not pinpoint our location but dropped many wasserbombs astern of us for about 45 minutes before sailing off to rejoin the Task Force. Once we could no longer detect the Task Force, we surfaced and proceeded to Salamis with no further incident.

MITTELMEER PATROL 2
U-133 departed Salamis, Greece, on the evening of 06-MAR-42 and headed for Gruppe GRÜN. No sooner had we cleared the northwest corner of Crete when we were attacked by a British PBY in CO2863 on 07-MAR-42 in the late afternoon. The crew was alert and we performed a crash dive and evaded the wasserbombs, which detonated well astern.
On 08-MAR-42, we entered Gruppe GRÜN and began patrolling between the south of Crete and the Afrikan coast. On 10-MAR-42, we sank an escorted British Large Merchant heading west in CO5281 expending 2 torpedoes, one of which pre-detonated. We evaded the escort, which proved no threat.
On the evening of 11-MAR-42, we came across an Aquitania-class Troop Ship and LST heading east escorted by two destroyers. We fired 4 torpedoes – one pre-detonated and the other three struck the troop ship in the stern area and sank her. The escorts were no threat, but the LST got away.
The next evening, 12-MAR-42, U-133 came upon an Australian Tramp Steamer and Bathurst destroyer heading west in CO5518 and sank both with 2 torpedoes.
U-133 then headed south closed to the Afrikan coast. In the early hours of 13-MAR-42, we had a hydrophone contact on a Task Force west-southwest of our location. We quickly determined that it was heading away from us and decided not to expend the fuel to give chase. That evening, as we approached the southern-most leg of our patrol in CO5577, we had to crash dive to avoid detection by a Hudson bomber sighted to the east-southeast.
In the early hours of 14-MAR-42, U-133 heard another Task Force to the northeast heading west and we decided to attempt an intercept. Seventy-five minutes later, we were in good position in CO5261 on two Southampton Light Cruisers escorted by four destroyers heading west at 12 knots. We fired 4 torpedoes – 2 at each cruiser – and began a stern dive. On hydrophone, we heard 2 good detonations against the first target and two dud torpedoes strike the second cruiser. As we dove for safely, we could hear the collapse of bulkhead as the first cruiser sank. The escorts were no threat and the remaining cruiser got away.
We were headed back toward Salamis with only 2 stern torpedoes remaining, when late afternoon on 14-MAR-42 we sighted another Hudson bomber in CO5243. We began a crash dive, but engineering reported a problem with switching from diesel to electric – we were diving on ballast and momentum only for over a minute while engineering resolved the problem. The Hudson dropped wasserbombs astern the U-Boot, but we were able to escape with no damage. Surfacing late that night, we decided to head straight for Salamis, Greece, to get our engineering issues resolved. We arrived at Salamis at 17:25 on 15-MAR-42.
A short 10-day patrol thanks to an abundance of enemy targets in the patrol area.

MITTELMEER PATROL 3
U-133 departed Salamis, Greece, on the evening of 03-JUN-42 and headed for Gruppe BLAU and arrived on station 06-JUN-42. There was no shortage of enemy aircraft to be found in this area. Our time on the surface was spent decks awash whenever the sea state permitted so we could dive more quickly on sighting enemy aircraft.
On the evening of 06-JUN-42, we made contact with a small convoy on hydrophone east of our position heading west. By the time we met up with the convoy of two merchants and two escorts, we found ourselves in a heavy rain. U-133 slipped in between the two merchants sailing side-by-side and first sank a British Large Merchant followed by an Egyptian Small Merchant in CN3699. The escorts searched in vain as the rough seas masked our location at 17 meters.
At dusk on 07-JUN-42, the rain had passed and U-133 was jumped by two British Spitfires. We were able to dive just in time and the wasserbombs they released exploded aft and caused no damage.
On 08-JUN-42, U-133 caught a lone but armed New Zealand Tramp Steamer in CN6393 heading west-northwest. As we pressed the attack, a Sunderland sea plane was sighted passing overhead, but we were not detected. One torpedo sent the ship to the bottom.
On the morning of 10-JUN-42, U-133 dove to evade a British PBY in CN3696 and remained undetected. That afternoon, we engaged a small convoy of three merchants and two escorts in CN3692 heading west. We fired one torpedo each at a Greek and Egyptian Small Merchant and two torpedoes at a British Liberty Cargo. The Greek Small Merchant took a direct hit amidships and one torpedo hit the Liberty Cargo in a critical portion of the stern bringing her to a stop. The second torpedo against the Liberty Cargo was a dud and passed underneath the ship; while the last torpedo missed the Egyptian Small Merchant.
As we backed away while the escort searched for us, an Italian JU-88 showed on the scene and made an attack on the Egyptian Small Merchant. It appeared as though they got a hit on the ship before being shot down by the escorts. We noted survivors at the JU-88 crash site.
After the Egyptian Small merchant and two escorts made good their escape, U-133 closed in to fire one more torpedo at the Liberty Cargo sending her to the bottom. We then surfaced and proceeded to pick up the three surviving aircrew from the Italian JU-88 before proceeding quickly east out of the area. Just before dusk, we stopped outside Gruppe BLAU long enough to load our external torpedoes before heading back into the area.
Early morning on 11-JUN-42, we sighted a destroyer to the southwest heading east at 16 knots in CN3669. We went to decks awash and headed south to check it out when we sighted two Southampton Light Cruisers as part of a Task Force with four escorts. Realizing we would not be able to keep up with them, U-133 went to periscope depth and we fired our last two forward torpedoes at 8000 meters with ½ degree spread in hopes of hitting one of them. One torpedo hit the lead Southampton under the forward turret, which caused a massive explosion and she eventually sank by the bow.
At dusk on 13-JUN-42, U-133 was again jumped by two British Spitfires in CN3693. No wasserbombs were dropped, but machine gun fire raked our forward deck, which was quickly repaired once we surfaced again.
On the afternoon of 15-JUN-42, U-133 fired one stern torpedo at a British Granville Freighter heading west and sank her in CN6338. We dove to 140 meters to evade the escort, which was no threat, but the accompanying Passenger Cargo ship got away.
We decided to head north toward the southern coast of Italy when on the afternoon of 17-JUN-42 we crash dove in CN3369 to avoid wasserbombs from a British Hudson bomber – bombs landed aft with no damage. On 18-JUN-42, we dove to avoid detection by a British Kingfisher scout plane in CN3322.
There were no further incidents as U-133 made her way through the Straits of Messina, up the west coast of Italy, and docked at La Spezia, Italy, on 20-JUN-42.

U-133 departed La Spezia, Italy, on the evening of 01-SEP-42 and headed for Gruppe ROT north of the Afrikan coast. We entered the Patrol Zone on 03-SEP-1940, and the following morning we got hydrophone contact on an Enemy Task Force heading east in CJ7616. We remained undetected and reported the contact to BdU as soon as it was safe.
On the morning of 04-SEP-42, we made contact on hydrophone with a ship to the northeast and proceeded to intercept in CJ7615 and sank a lone but heavily armed Australian Large Merchant heading west. We fired two torpedoes, but one predated en route to the target. It took a third torpedo to put the ship down.
In the afternoon of 07-SEP-42, U-133 again made hydrophone contact with ships to the southeast heading west. We set a parallel course to get well ahead of them and had to make several adjustments as we determined their course was 250. Late afternoon, we lined up on an Liberty Cargo ship with one escort. With clam seas, we fired three torpedoes at 3500 meters with one-half degree spread and contact fuse. All three torpedoes hit their mark. U-133 started backing away immediately after launch and the escort never found us.
Early morning of 08-SEP-42, U-133 caught a warship and then a merchant south of our position moving east. We immediately paralleled their course to get well ahead of them and then laid in wait in CJ7651. An hour before dawn, we could finally make out an Aquitania-class followed by a PPQ-class Troop Ship with just one escort leading the way. U-133 fired two torpedoes at each troop ship at 4000 meters with one-half degree spread. All torpedoes found their mark sinking both ships. The escort was no threat.
U-133 started making her way east when we received a radio report of a merchant to the south heading west. We decided to investigate and caught up with an New Zealand Tramp Steamer with one escort. We fired our stern torpedo at 3200 meters and got a direct hit amidships. With calm seas, we immediately started a dive to evade the escort. We heard bulkheads bursting and thought we had sunk the merchant, but 15 minutes later we heard bulkheads bursting again at the exact moment we lost contact with the escort. We cautiously made our way back to the surface to find the Tramp Steamer and escort had been sunk by two Italian JU-88s.
We surfaced and made our way back to La Spezia without further incident.

MITTELMEER PATROL 5
U-133 departed La Spezia, Italy, on the evening of 08-DEC-42 and headed for Gruppe ROT north of the Afrikan coast. We entered the Patrol Zone on 09-DEC-1940, to a light rain and heavy seas. We noted that our engines were not putting out the standard revolutions for the speed selected and that we were consuming more fuel than usual in order to maintain a desired speed. The LI began investigating the issue immediately.
On the afternoon of 11-DEC-42, U-133 picked up a convoy on hydrophone to the southwest heading east. With marginal weather, we maneuvered inside the convoy of 11 merchants and 3 escorts without being detected. We fired three eels at an Aquatania-class Troop Ship and 1 eel at a Small Tanker – all torpedoes ran true and found their target. With the Troop Ship dead in the water, the crippled Small Tanker maneuvered behind her when we fired our stern torpedo at 600 meters for a direct hit amidships, which broke her in half. The escorts were no threat in the bad weather and we made good our escape to the southwest.
Late afternoon on 14-DEC-42, U-133 lookouts sighted a warship and then a Troop Ship northwest of our position. We estimated that they were doing 10 to 11 knots. We were still having issues with engine performance and were not sure we could outflank them before they reached the safety of friendly air cover, so we decided on a long-range engagement. We went to periscope depth and ran at Flank to close the distance. The seas were calm and we fired 4 eels with 0.5 degree spread at approximately 9.000 meters. We observed one torpedo pre-detonation approximately 4 minutes into its travel. We hoped that at least one of the remaining three torpedoes would find the target and were surprised when in fact all three eels hit a Laconia-class Troop Ship. She went down about 45 minutes later. Given our distance from the target, the escort was obviously no threat to us.
When we finally surfaced, we tested the engines again at full revolutions and were only getting about 12 knots. The LI could not come up with any recommendation short of pulling the engines apart, so I decided the best thing to do was inform BdU we were returning to base to get the issue resolved.
We proceeded up the west coast of Sardinia and arrived at La Spezia on 16-DEC-42 without incident.

U-133 departed La Spezia, Italy, on the morning of 08-MAR-1943 and headed for patrol zone BLAU north of the Afrikan coast. We entered the PZ on the evening of 09-MAR-1943; a very dark night with heavy rain and high seas. We spent the night submerged. In the morning, we surfaced to much the same weather and were thankful for a radar and radar warning device. In fact, weather during the entire patrol was terrible for hunting and our torpedoes; but great for hiding from enemy escorts.
On the evening of 12-MAR-1943, we made contact on hydrophone with a ship to the northeast. We intercepted and spent a lot of time hugging up next to the Large Merchant, within 150 meters of her submerged, in order to finally identify her as Australian. We then backed off; surfaced; and got around in front of her to engage at 500 meters. Even at that range, keeping sight of her in the dark and rain was not easy. We initially fired two torpedoes – one missed and one was a dud. We fired two more eels – one missed and the other hit home, which was enough to eventually sink her.
Early the next morning, 13-MAR-1943, we got a hydrophone contact on a convoy to the west heading east. With rain and high seas, we decided our best chance was to go right in the front. The lead destroyer passed within 1500 meters of us without detection as we slowly crept in. At the center of the convoy, we fired two torpedoes at a Large Merchant, two at a Ceramic-type Troop Ship, and our stern eel at a Large Merchant passing behind. The first Merchant took two hits; the Troop Ship took one hit astern with one miss; and the stern torpedo proved to be a dud against the second Large Merchant. Our tubes empty, we decided to head to 140 meters dropping a decoy and hide from the 4 escorts observed. The convoy went in every direction after the torpedoes struck and eventually the Large Merchant and Troop Ship sank almost simultaneously in CJ7539. We were never detected and made our escape to the north.
Early morning on 14-MAR-1943, U-133 caught a single merchant on hydrophone. Unlike the earlier situation, we decided to track the ship through the night; running ahead and using our hydrophone to relocate her several times until dawn. We were then able to identify her as a Greek Tramp Steamer and sank her with one torpedo in CJ7616.
In chasing down the Greek steamer, we had departed our assigned PZ. We were on our way back when we started receiving multiple radar warnings to the southwest. U-133 immediately turned south to intercept in case it was a convoy. In CJ7642, we submerged and listened, picking up two merchants and two escorts on hydrophone. We waited for the ships to appear – an in-line convoy off two Troop Ships between two escorts. We fired our last two internal eels at the lead Troop Ship – one hit amidships and the other pre-detonated after 2 minutes of travel. The escorts did not search very hard, deciding to remain close and protect the two Troop Ships. After about 40 minutes, the Troop Ship sank and the remaining convoy departed.
With high seas and no internal torpedoes, we surfaced and made our way back to La Spezia without further incident.

INVASION OF PANTELLERIA
U-133 departed La Spezia, Italy, on the evening of 07-JUN-1943 and headed for CN22 southwest of Sicily. We entered the PZ on the evening of 09-JUN-1943 and proceeded south toward the western side of Pantelleria to patrol.
On the morning of 10-JUN-1943, we began to receive multiple radar warnings to the northwest and proceeded to periscope depth. Almost immediately we began picking up two sets of enemy formations – a task force at high speed to the northwest and a slower convoy to the west-northwest. We re-surfaced and began looking for the faster task force with our radio operator at the ready. At 0504, we spotted the task force of 2 Battleships and many destroyers. We immediately send out a contact report to BdU and dove to periscope depth once again.
We contemplated firing 2 torpedoes at both Battleships, but decided that probably would not be enough to stop either one; so we concentrated all 4 forward eels on the lead Battleship – HMS Nelson. We released our eels at 05:24 at 3400 meters and all 4 eels found their mark; HMS Nelson was dead in the water and sinking.
About this time, the first wave of Italian aircraft arrived and engaged the HMS Rodney and her escorts as we backed away and started reloading forward tubes. The Italian aircraft were very aggressive in their attack and damaged the HMS Rodney and sank 4 of her escorts.
With the Task Force moving at 23 knots, there was no way we would have time to reload torpedoes and be able to re-engage HMS Rodney. Furthermore, we were trying to avoid escort destroyers while maneuvering to get set up for the oncoming invasion convoy. All we could do was watch the bombardment of Pantelleria by HMS Rodney and her remaining escorts. It was a fierce exchange of artillery between the British and the defending Italian destroyers with direct hits on both sides. But in the end, the overwhelming fire power of the HMS Rodney silenced the defenders.
As we maneuvered on the incoming convoy, the second wave of Italian bombers made their attack. The Italian JU-88s damaged a few ships but took heavy losses in the exchange. As the Italian attack was ending, U-133 fired a salvo of 4 torpedoes at a Modern Tanker and an Auxiliary Cruiser. Two eels detonated on the tanker and one eel struck the Aux Cruiser astern putting her propulsion out of commission. The fourth eel missed the Aux Cruiser. We also fired our stern torpedo at a Troop Ship, which struck her amidships, but was ineffective at slowing her down or sinking her. At this point, U-133 dove to 130 meters to avoid the destroyers that were converging near our location. U-133 was never detected and the escorts ultimately went back to supporting the invasion fleet.
As the destroyers moved away, be began to make our way back to periscope depth. It was during this time that we heard a ship’s bulkheads imploding – it was the Modern Tanker sinking. When we finally reached periscope depth, we looked around and the invasion fleet was anchoring outside Pantelleria harbor. We decided to slip in at 1 knot to see if we could finish off the Aux Cruiser and sink perhaps a few other ships.
We fired our last 3 internal torpedoes; one each at two Troop Ships and the Aux Cruiser. We sank one Troop Ship and the Aux Cruiser; the last torpedo was a dud and did not detonate on contact. We immediately turned north and descended back to 130 meters before the escorts could detect us and we made good our escape to the northwest.
Approximately 25 kilometers from Pantelleria, we surfaced and signaled our status. In CJ8845, we sighted an enemy Task Force of 4 destroyers heading 125 at 16 knots. Unable to engage, we transmitted a contact report to BdU. About 20 minutes later, we witnessed 4 Italian JU-88s attacking the Task Force. Unfortunately, no destroyers were sunk and the Italians lost 3 of their 4 JU-88s. We made our way towards the area as the Task Force continued on and were able to rescue three aviators.
U-133 made her way back to La Spezia without further incident.

STOP ITALIAN BATTLESHIP SURRENDER
U-133 departed La Spezia, Italy, before dawn on of 02-SEP-1943 and headed for Gruppe “A”, 50 to 75 kilometers east of La Maddalena in northern Sardinia. Our orders were to patrol the area for 14 days and stop the Italians from surrendering their battleships to the enemy should the Italian Grand Fascist Council sue for peace. We were also advised that the German Luftwaffe would be patrolling the area and get involved should the battleships head south from La Spezia toward Malta. On departure, we shadowed an Italian Akua U-Boot departing La Spezia, and were surprised when she suddenly turned around and returned to base.
We had just rounded the Italian island of Elba when we had to dive to avoid 2 American B-17s on patrol. To say the least, we were very surprised to see enemy aircraft patrolling this far north in the Tyrrhenisches Meer. Later that day, we had to again dive to avoid detection by an Akua U-Boot patrolling the northern area.
At 06:00 on 03-SEP-1943, we arrived at our patrol zone off La Maddalena and began a box search pattern around CH4395 to the northwest and CJ5778 to the southeast. For 6 days we continued our patrol, occasionally having to dive to avoid enemy PBYs, Wellingtons, B-17s and B-24s patrolling the area. On 08-SEP-1943, we received a signal that the Provisional Government had indeed surrendered and the Italian Battleship Fleet was preparing to leave La Spezia.
On the morning of 09-SEP-1943, the weather was overcast with heavy rain. At 14:28, we got our first hydrophone contact on warships to the north moving fast toward us in CJ5477. We maneuvered to intercept and waited at periscope depth. At 15:03, we sighted 2 destroyers and 2 battleships coming out of the fog heading 150 at 20 knots. We fired 2 torpedoes at each battleship – the RN Vittorio Veneto in the lead and RN Littorio trailing – all 4 torpedoes hit their targets amidships or astern. In high seas, we remained at periscope depth and watched both warships go dead in the water.
We remained silent as the destroyers tried in vain to find us when we suddenly got a new hydrophone contact to the northwest. On viewing through the periscope, we could see the flash of large naval guns through the heavy rain even though we estimated the contacts to be perhaps 10 kilometers away. At the time, we were not aware that the German Luftwaffe had located and was attacking the battleship RN Roma.
By 15:25, both RN Vittorio Veneto and RN Littorio were sinking. We waited until the destroyers disappeared into the fog and then turned to intercept the RN Roma. The crew was able to load 2 forward eels when we saw the flames of RN Roma in the distance. Realizing we could not get close enough submerged, U-133 surfaced and proceeded at flank speed and standard propulsion toward the battleship. We realized this would make us susceptible to enemy radar and had our own radar on to track enemy destroyers. Regretably, we were still some distance from the battleship when the first destroyer was detected on radar and coming out of the fog. We quickly dove to periscope depth, running silent and fired our 2 forward torpedoes estimating range and speed of the battleship – both torpedoes missed.
We could see a destroyer coming up behind us, clearly from the first task force we engaged, and fired our stern torpedo at her, but the torpedo failed to detonate. Immediately after launch, we changed course 30 degrees to the west and proceeded at flank to 150 meters dropping two decoys passing 20 meters depth. We slowed to 1 knot passing 80 meters and could hear more destroyers joining the search from the northwest. Passing 110 meter depth, we could hear at least 3 destroyers above us, but they were unable to detect us.
By 16:30, we were at 140 meters and the destroyers had moved off never detecting us. We made our way slowly to the surface by 20:27. U-133 then proceeded northwest at standard speed and made our way between Corsica and Sardinia during the night.
Our torpedo tubes now reloaded, we then headed south to CH93 to see what we could pick up. At 12:57 on 11-SEP-1943, we transmitted a contact report on a convoy west of our position in CH9339 and closing; went to periscope depth; and proceeded to intercept.
In position, we could see the convoy coming out of the fog – 3 Troop Ships, a Modern Tanker, and several smaller merchants. We estimated at least 4 destroyers. We proceeded into the convoy and at 13:30 fired 2 torpedoes each at a Ceramic-type Ocean Liner and a Troop Ship. All torpedoes hit their target. U-133 then immediately turned north to fire our stern eel at a Chatham-type Troop Ship, which hit its intended target. After firing our stern eel, U-133 turned port to a southerly course, again diving to 140 meters at flank and releasing 2 decoys passing 20 meters. Passing 80 meters, we went silent at 1 knot. We were not detected by the destroyers; although one remained in the area for about 1.5 hours while the Chatham Troop Ship slowly sank by the stern.
We finally surfaced at 15:30 and transmitted our status report as we turned north. With bad weather and only one internal eel, we realized that it could be some time before we could load externals, and decided to make our way to Toulon, France.
We arrived at our new home port of Toulon at 18:57 on 12-SEP-1943 without incident.
